For centuries, herbs and plants have been used for medicinal purposes and as food as well. Many herbs and plants retain the properties of immune-stimulating and anti-tumor. Different types of herbs contain a variety of phytochemicals which stops the cancerous cell from multiplying and also stimulate the protective enzymes within the body. Coneflower, Garlic, Turmeric, Burdock, Green Tea, Ginseng, Black cohosh and Flaxseed has the biochemical properties that can help to reduce the growth of a tumor. Coneflower (Echinacea) Echinacea is a kind of herbaceous flowering plant belonging to the daisy family. Different species of Echinacea are commonly called coneflowers. The type which is called Purple Coneflower (Echinacea purpurea) is most commonly used in the treatment of cancer. A research which has been conducted on mice, E. purpurea raises the number of natural killer cells. Another substance called Flavonoids which is present in Echinacea works as an immune-stimulant and it lessens the harmful consequence of radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Garlic (Allium sativum) Garlic has been used for treating many diseases for hundreds of years. Researches show that garlic has an antibacterial and antioxidant effect on the body which helps in preventing different kinds of cancers such as breast, stomach, esophagus, pancreas, colon and prostate. Components found in garlic and its oil such as allicin, flavonoids, and allyl sulfides and Ajoene suppress the growth of multiple cancer types and its natural antibiotic and antioxidant properties may help prevent cancer. Bioflavonoids, cyanidin and quercetin, are also found in garlic with antioxidant properties. Use of ripened garlic extract improves the immune system, removes the harmful substances from the body, enhances the detoxifying enzyme’s activity and lessen the complications of chemotherapy and radiotherapy. Turmeric (Curcuma longa) Curcumin which is present in turmeric has anti-cancerous properties. Curcumin enhances the antioxidant and anti-inflammatory actions within the body. Phenolic substances that are part of curcumin limit different types of cancers such as breast, lung, skin and stomach. Another substance found in turmeric polyphenol is considered very effective in preventing the growth of tumors. It kills the cancer cells and alters the activity of genes in breast cancer cells. Burdock (Arctium lappa) Burdock is used in many herbal remedies such as arthritis, tonsillitis and measles. Its root has gummy texture and sweet taste. Researchers have found that burdock has some active elements that generate antitumor activities by altering oncogenes. It is been used in the treatment of different tumors including breast. It relieves the pain, lessens the tumor size and enhances the survival phase. Burdock seeds hold an active component called Arctigenin which can remove the tumor cells with low nutrients. Burdock root has anti-oxidant elements that can affect tumor development. Extract of its root is used to protect body cells from toxic substances. An ingredient of burdock called Tannin is considered the most important phenolic compound because it limits the cancer propagation, enhances the immune system and stimulates macrophages action. Green tea (Camellia sinensis) Green tea has a compound call polyphenol which causes antitumor and anti-mutagenic and antioxidant activity. Research on animal shows that green tea polyphenols confine the cancer cell division. Green tea and its primary catechins reduce the risk of tumor in several organs of the body and stimulate the immune system too. It also helps in reducing the harmful effects of radiation. Ginseng (Panax ginseng) Ginseng is a plant. Its dried root is used for many therapeutic uses including cancer. Active substances present in the ginseng decreases or blocks the development of a tumor. It also limits the cancerous cell to spread. Ginseng’s extract like juice or tea and powder is used for the prevention of breast cancer. Ginseng retains the tumor development by interrupting the DNA. The most important and beneficial effect of the Ginseng is that it restarts the natural killer cells impaired during chemotherapy and radiotherapy, induces macrophages and enhances antibodies formation. Black cohosh Black cohosh is a shrub. Breast cancer patients take black cohosh during radiotherapy and chemotherapy. It has been used for many other ailments. An investigation has revealed that black cohosh given with other chemotherapeutic agents has synergistic effects on breast cancer patients. A study’s results that taking black cohosh might increase survival in women already diagnosed with breast cancer. Flaxseed The flax plant has small brown and golden hard-coated seeds. These seeds comprise active components like fiber, omega 3 and liganans. Flaxseed has more potent phytoestrogens than the soy products and intake of flaxseed results in a huge change in the elimination of hydroxyestrone. Research has shown that flax seeds have powerful anti-cancer activity.
