Breast cancer is one of the most common cause of death from cancer among women. In Pakistan, every 9th woman is at high risk of becoming the victim of breast cancer. This 9th woman can be your loved one or even you so, every woman should be aware of this fatal disease and the prevention methods. It is very rational to find techniques that can decrease or prevent the risk of developing breast cancer because it is causing a high rate of morbidity and mortality among women. It is estimated that each year more than 90,000 cases of breast cancer are reported in Pakistan. Nearly 40,000 women die from this type of cancer. In the light of many studies healthy lifestyle is most important in the prevention of diseases including breast cancer. Women can decrease their risk of breast cancer by changing their behavior and way of life. There are some do’s and don’ts to change lifestyle. The other important thing is awareness to prevent this disease. Knowing the risk factors and alteration in lifestyle is considered to be effective in the prevention of breast cancer. Different studies indicate that gender, age, family history, personal health history, Mensural & Reproductive History, Dense Breast Tissue, Lack of Physical Activity, Poor Diet, Radiation on the Chest, Hormone Replacement Therapy, Breastfeeding, smoking and use of alcohol are some of the factors that increase or decrees the chances of breast cancer. Following changes in lifestyle and awareness can be an easy, effective and economical way to prevent this deadly disease.

  1. Healthy diet and nutrition

Consumption of fruits, vegetables, hundred percent whole-grain foods, use of organic food, chicken, fish, beans, good fat, turmeric, black pepper, olive, soy and vitamin D can help to prevent breast cancer. We should also limit the bad fats, sugar, processed meat, dairy, overcooked food and Refined Carbs.

  1. Performing physical activities

Obesity is one of the major cause of breast cancer. So every woman having overweight should limit high-calorie foods and beverages and increase physical activity to help with weight loss. Exercise and physical activity decrease the risk of breast cancer by changing the estrogen, insulin, and insulin-like growth factor.

  1. Considering family history

Women with a strong family history of cancer should take special steps to protect themselves.  About 5% to 10% of breast cancers are thought to be hereditary, caused by abnormal genes passed from a parent (either the mother or the father) to the child. Considering family history the person must be more vigilant than others and should maintain a healthy lifestyle. Change in lifestyle is not only important in preventing before it happens but holds equal significance after the diagnosis of breast cancer.
